A question is part of an exercise used to acquire an answer from the student. After creating an exercise, you can add one or multiple questions to it. Each question type has its own specific properties and different question types can be used within the same exercise. You can see an overview of the question types here.
After creating a question, you have the option to copy the question to another exercise, to copy the criteria to another question, change the order of the question or even change the question type. All of these option are explained below.
Question properties
Some properties of a question are the same for each question type. You can find these below.
Rich content editor
Each question in Ans has a rich content editor to format the text and add additional information to the question. The options are mentioned below.
- You can use HTML to format the text (code).
- It’s possible to make text bold(format_bold), italic (format_italic)or to underline text (format_underlined).
- You can make use of subscript (subscript) and superscript (superscript).
- You can format the size of the text or use code as content(¶). To highlight the code in the correct way, click the <>-icon and change the code-line from <pre> to <pre class="hljs #code_language">. (For example <pre class="hljs python>)
- It’s possible to insert tables (table_rows), URLs (link), images (image) and files (file_upload). Currently, the position option for images only applies to images in digital tests.
- It’s possible to add lists, with enumeration (format_list_numbered) or with dots (list).
- It's possible to undo (undo) or redo (redo) changes.
- You can give parts of a text a specific colour (font_download).
- You can insert equations (functions) or variables (Variable).
- You can insert emojis (insert_emoticon).
- With the omega button Ω you can insert special characters in the rich text editor
- You can align your text to the left, right, or center (format_align_left).
- With the microphone button (mic) you can record audio which will be embedded in the question directly.
Points
For each question, you need to define the maximum amount of points a student can earn for the question. For some question types you have additional options for points.
General question options
Each question has extra options which can be enabled. The standard options for each question are mentioned below. Options may differ depending on the question type chosen. You can find these options when you click the three dots -icon in the top right corner of the question.
-
Bonus
This marks the question as a bonus question, which means the number of points awarded with this question will be counted until the maximum amount of points achievable for this assignment is reached. The points of the bonus question are not included in the maximum amount of points that can be achieved for the assignment. If the student answers the question incorrectly, this will not be detracted from the number of points and the mark.
-
Predefined answer
Set a predefined answer which students can keep, edit or delete. This will show up in the answer field. This option is only possible for the open question type in a digital tests.
- Word limit
Limits the maximum amount of words that can be submitted in the participant's answer. Once a student reaches this limit, the answer field will automatically close and no new characters can be added. This option is only possible for the open question type in a digital tests. -
Partial scoring
Students will receive points when their answer is partly correct. For example, if the total number of points they can receive for a question is 2 and their answer is 50% correct, they will still receive 1 point. Without this option, they can only receive 0 or the maximum number of points.
Grading options for questions
-
Start with zero points
If this option is enabled the marking of this question will always start at zero points and the points will be added up when selecting the criteria. When this option is disabled, the marking will start with the maximum amount of points that can be awarded for this question and selecting the criteria will be subtracted from this maximum. This means that the criteria should be added as minus points of the total amount. The reviewer can then select the criteria if the student did not meet this with their answer, so it can be detracted from the total amount of points.
-
Limit minimum to zero points (for closed-ended questions only)
With this option enabled, it’s not possible to go below zero points when selecting the different criteria. It is still possible to manually adjust the number of points to go below zero with the adjustment option during the reviewing.
-
Limit maximum to total points (for closed-ended questions only)
In the grading settings, it’s possible to set the maximum amount of points achievable with the question, separate from the points per criteria. When this number deviates from the maximum amount achievable by adding up the criteria points, this option will cap the maximum amount of points to this manually set number.
