An exercise is a part of an assignment, in which you explain what you expect from a student. Exercises can either be created and/or added from a question bank or created from within a course assignment.
When creating a new exercise you will first need to give the exercise a name. After the exercise is named, a content block and questions can be added.
-
Content block
A content block can be added to your exercise to explain the objective or give more background information about the question(s) you are adding to your exercise. A content block can come in the form of audio, code, text, image and video. Adding a content block to your exercise is recommended but not required. Read more about content blocks here.

Questions
After creating an exercise, you can add one or multiple questions to it. Each question type has its own specific properties. A question is part of an exercise which is used to acquire an answer from the student. Different question types can be used within the same exercise. You can find an overview of possible question types here.
Adding and creating exercises
Create a new exercise in your course assignment
After creating an assignment from your course, you can create exercises from within your assignment. To create a new exercise from your course assignment, follow the steps below.
- Navigate to your course assignment.
- Click New exercise.
- Optionally, fill in the time limit (beta) and enable 'Exercise can be viewed once'.
- Click Save.
You can now add a content block and/or question(s) to your newly created exercise. You can also adjust the order of the exercises and/or questions by dragging them to a different position via the -icon. If you want to use the exercise in multiple assignments, you can either copy the exercise directly from this assignment or you can store it in a question bank. The benefit of the second option is not only are able to reuse the exercise in multiple assignments, but you can track the insights for each exercise over the course of multiple assignments/school years by creating a link. You can also adjust the exercise in one place, for instance, based on the data gathered from the insights, and synchronise it over the different assignments with one click. The exercise shows the date and time when it was last updated.
Add exercises from a question bank to your course assignment
If you have previously added exercises to your question bank, you can add them to your course assignment.
To add an exercise from a question bank to your course assignment, follow the steps below.
- Navigate to your course assignment.
- Click Add exercises.
- Select or search for exercises you want to add. You can add exercises from course assignments or question banks you have access to.
- Select the exercises you want to add and click Add.
When an exercise is added from the question bank to a course assignment, there is a link between the exercise in the question bank and the exercise in the assignment. When an exercise within the question bank has been modified, the date and time in 'Last updated' in the exercise will be updated. If the latest version has not yet been synchronised with the assignment, the exercise will have a yellow banner with the warning Outdated version in the course assignment. This works the other way similarly. If you modify the exercise in the course assignment you will also see the warning Latest version. After clicking on this warning, you can choose to retrieve the version from the question bank, or store the version in the course assignment in the question bank. You can read more on the synchronisation of the exercises between course assignments and question banks here.
View where an exercise was previously used
When adding exercises from a question bank, you can see where an exercise has previously been used in assignments. This helps you avoid accidentally reusing exercises and provides insight into their usage history.
A section appears below the exercise card labelled Previously used in X assignments. This section lists assignments in which the exercise has been used and for which the taking session has already ended. In course assignments, only assignments that ended before the current assignment are included in the list.
Please note that only assignments are displayed that you have access to.
