This question type is available in both digital tests and written assignments.
A drawing question allows students to draw, sketch, mark, or label their answers directly within the question. Students can work on a blank canvas or on top of an uploaded background image.
If you would like students to also provide written text, use the 'Free formatted' question type.
Questions can be created from a question bank or within a course assignment. The image below is an example of a drawing question being answered in a digital test:

Create a drawing question (Digital test)
Create a drawing question for a digital test
To create a drawing question in a digital test, follow the steps below.
- Navigate to your question bank or your course assignment.
- Click New exercise, fill in a name and click Create.
- Click New question and select Drawing.
- Formulate the question in the 'Question*' field.
- Fill in the number of points the question is worth.
- Optionally, add a model answer.
- Click Upload background image to upload your image. Using a background image is optional. You can upload a JPEG, JPG, PNG, GIF or AVG file.
- Select the scoring method:
- Criteria: Grade by selecting each applicable criterion.
- Rubric: Grade by selecting on criterion per set.
- Slider: Grade my manually entering a score.
- Add the Evaluation criteria. This option is not relevant for the scoring method 'Slider'.
Click on Add criteria to add a criterion. Optionally, click Add group, to add a group. More information can be found here. - Optionally, add learning objectives in the 'Objectives' field.
- Click Create.

- Navigate to your question bank or course assignment.
- Click New exercise, fill in a name and click Create.
- Click + New question and select Drawing.
- Write the question in the 'Question*' field.
- Fill in the number of points.
- Fill in the page height of the answer field.
- Optionally add a model answer.
- Upload a background image.
- Optionally add an image caption.
- Select scoring method:
- Criteria: Select applicable criteria
- Rubric: Select one criterion per set
- Slider: Manually enter score
- Optionally add learning objectives.
- Click Create.

Add a grading scheme to an image question
All options mentioned below for the grading scheme can also be added or adjusted from the exercise tab. However, if the assignment has been taken, it is only possible to adjust the grading scheme from the grading scheme tab.
To add or adjust the grading scheme of a drawing question, follow the steps below.
- Click the Grading scheme tab at the top of the assignment or question bank exercise.
- Go to the question for which you want to set the grading scheme.
- Click the -icon.
- Fill in or adjust the amount of points the question is worth.
- Optionally, add or adjust the model answer.
- Select or switch the scoring method. You can choose from 'Criteria', 'Rubric' or 'Slider'.
- Criteria: Grade by selecting each applicable criterion
- Rubric: Grade by selecting on criterion per set.
- Slider: Grade my manually entering a score.
- Add or adjust the Evaluation criteria. This option is not relevant for the scoring method 'Slider'.
- Click on Add criteria to add a criterion. Optionally, click Add group, to add a group. More information can be found here.
- Optionally, add or adjust the learning objectives in the 'Objectives' field.
- Click Update.

For additional options, click the -icon. You will see the following:

Bonus
This marks the question as a bonus question, which means that its points are not included in the maximum amount of points achievable for that assignment. If a student answers the question incorrectly, this will not be detracted from the number of points and the mark. However, when awarding points, it is possible to achieve more points that the maximum points achievable for the assignment.

Partial scoring
Students will receive points when their answer is partly correct. For example, if the total number of points they can receive for a question is 2 and their answer is 50% correct, they will still receive 1 point. Without this option, they can only receive 0 or the maximum number of points.
For written assignments, Ans offers the following extra options:

The question will start on a new page.

The image is displayed with maximum width on the page.
