Use chat during digital tests – Ans

Chat during a digital test allows instructors and invigilators to communicate with participants. You can send announcements to all participants or communicate with an individual participant or group.

Enable chat

Navigate to your digital test.
Click Taking in the menu at the top.
Click Chats.
Click Chat OFF on the right.
Select Allow participants to ask questions.

To disable chat, click Chat ON and select Don't allow participants to ask questions.

Use live chat

The chats page is available from the digital test's taking page. It opens on Announcements. A sidebar lists the announcements and the chat thread for each participant or group.

Each row in the sidebar shows the participant or group name, the time of the last message, and a preview of the message. A dot indicates that a thread contains unread messages.

Search chats and messages

You can use the search field above the sidebar to find chats and messages. Search results are divided into two sections:

Chats matches participant names, student numbers, and group names.
Messages matches the content of messages.

Matching terms are highlighted in the results. Selecting a message result opens the corresponding chat and scrolls to the message.

Send an announcement

You can send announcements to all participants. Announcements appear in the same timeline as chat messages and are labelled Announcement.

Open the chats page.
Click Announcements.
Enter your message.
Press Enter on your keyboard.

Participants receive the announcement as a notification. If chat is enabled, students can reply to the announcement in a private conversation. To have one-way communication with the participants of the digital test, chat needs to be disabled. Participants then cannot respond to the announcement.

Chat with a participant or group

You can communicate with an individual participant or a group from the sidebar. Selecting a participant or group opens the chat thread.

The chat header shows the participant or group name, the session state, and an options menu via the -icon. From this menu, you can add a comment or change the additional time without returning to the sessions overview.

Read confirmations

Sent messages show a read confirmation:

A single check means that the message was sent.
A double check means that the other side has read the message.

Message history

Messages are grouped by day under a date divider. Each message group shows the time it was sent. Hover over a time to see the full date and time.

Announcements appear in the same timeline as chat messages. They are labelled Announcement and are displayed in blue, positioned in the middle of the chat, making them visually distinct from regular chat messages.
