Once the Turnitin integration has been configured, you can start using it in your assignment.
After configuring the Turnitin integration, you will need to enable it in the settings of your assignment. Turnitin can be enabled for digital tests and hand-in assignments.
For digital tests, Ans submits answers to open questions with 20 or more words, images uploaded inside an open question, files uploaded in a file upload question and answers to code questions.
To enable Turnitin for your test, follow the steps below.
- Click your domain School name in the menu on the left.
- Click label_importantCourses in the menu at the top.
- Select your course or use the search bar.
- Select your assignment or use the search bar.
- Click settings Settings in the menu at the top.
- Click Integrations in the menu on the left.
- Click Enable next to Turnitin.
- A new page will automatically open where you can configure the Turnitin settings for your assignment. A new tab Turnitin is also created at the left side, below all regular digital test options.
Turnitin settings
Now that Turnitin is enabled for the assignment, you will find the Turnitin tab at the left side, below all regular assignment tabs. On this page, you can find the 'Settings', 'Actions' & 'Visibility'. If necessary, you can also remove Turnitin for your assignment.
Under the option 'Settings', you can check the box Automatically submit to Turnitin to automatically send submissions to Turnitin for plagiarism checking once the student has submitted their assignment.
Under the option 'Actions', you can click Submit to Turnitin to submit all answers that have not yet been analysed. This action can be done if the Turnitin integration was enabled after students already submitted their assignments.
Under the option 'Visibility', you can click Show plagiarism significance to allow students to see the plagiarism significance of their documents.
Turnitin for students
Students can see if the Turnitin Similarity Check is enabled for their assignment. In the example below you can see their view when uploading their hand-in assignment.
As soon as students have submitted their assignment, it is possible to match the content between the assignments. Not every file can be analysed by Turnitin. The file requirements can be found here.
In order to see if there is a match between the content of students, follow the steps below.
- Navigate to your assignment.
- Click Results in the menu at the top.
- Click on the student number you want to view.
- Click on Turnitin.
- The Turnitin report will be displayed.
As seen in the example below, this hand-in assignment has a 2% content match with another hand-in assignment. 11 words form the largest match. Click Open in Turnitin in order to see the file in Turnitin.
When viewing the answers of a student you will be also prompted with a banner indicating that Turnitin has detected plagiarism within the submission. By clicking on the name of the submission you will be navigated to the plagiarism report within Turnitin.
Analyse results with Turnitin
After the test has been taken with the Turnitin integration enabled, you are able to check the submitted answers for citation mistakes or inappropriate copying.
We compile the data from the Turnitin integration within Ans. In the results overview you will be able to see how much content matched per answered question. To view the individual Turnitin report of a student, follow the steps below.
- Navigate to your assignment.
- Click settings Settings in the menu at the top.
- Click beenhere Results in the menu at the top.
- Click on the student number you want to view.
- Click Turnitin in the tab at the top.
- The Turnitin report will be displayed.
Once you have opened this tab, you are able to see the significance score which is expressed in the percentage of content that matched their database. You can also open the detailed overview of the matched content within Turnitin itself by clicking on the button Open in Turnitin for each specific question.
Due to GDPR regulations, only the UserID is forwarded to Turnitin, meaning that the name or student number is not shown in the Turnitin report. The UserID is a unique identifier is used to locate a student in Ans. To find a specific student, in Ans, navigate back to the Exercises tab and paste /{UserID} at the end of the URL. For example: https://ans.app/universities/{school_id}/users/1234567 is the URL where the last numbers are the UserID.
We also include the significance score on the results page when the Turnitin integration is enabled. This is the highest significance percentage recorded for all questions of the student.
