The Proctorio extension is a Google Chrome extension. Therefore, this is the only browser which can be used when Proctorio is enabled. After the taking session, Proctorio will store all footage recorded in the Proctorio Gradebook, which can be accessed from the test in Ans. To review the footage, you will also need the Proctorio extension. The Proctorio extension can be downloaded via: https://getproctorio.com/. If you are using the preview option as an instructor, the Proctorio extension is not necessary.
error_outline Students can begin the Proctorio checks one hour before the timeslot starts. Students can only start the test once the timeslot begins and when they've successfully gone through the Proctorio checks.
Configure Proctorio for your digital test
After you have clicked on the menu option Proctorio in the settings of your test, you can configure all relevant settings for your test. The settings can be divided into six categories. You can find an explanation has been added below.
Record options
-
Capture video from the webcam for the entire exam
Proctorio will use the webcam of the participants device to record video during the entire session of the participant. The webcam will be turned on during the whole taking session and it will be visible in the Proctorio gradebook.-
Capture room requires the participant to show their entire exam environment
This option can only be enabled in case the video of the participant is captured. It will provide the possibility for a participant to show their surroundings before the test begins. In the Proctorio gradebook, you can click on the room check to see what the participant has recorded.
-
Capture room requires the participant to show their entire exam environment
-
Capture audio from the microphone for the entire exam
Proctorio will use the microphone of the participants device to record audio during the entire session of the participant. The microphone will be turned on during the whole taking session and it will be visible in the Proctorio gradebook. -
Capture screen from the participants' desktop for the entire exam
If this option is enabled, the Proctorio extension will require a screen to be shared. Proctorio will capture the screen via the screen sharing option of Google Chrome. The entire session of the participant is captured and will be visible in the Proctorio gradebook. -
Capture screenshots and URLs of any website visited during the exam
This option makes sure all URLs of websites which are visited during the taking session are captured. Also, if other applications besides Google Chrome are started, this will be captured. Proctorio will make screenshots and you can view the visited URLs and screenshots of programs started by the participants in one overview in the Proctorio Gradebook.
error_outline If there were no recording options enabled, then no data will be stored by Proctorio. Meaning there will not be a gradebook available for the assignment.
Verify options
-
Require the participant to show a photo identification card before beginning the exam
If this option is enabled, Proctorio will show a screen where the participant needs to show a photo identification card. After the taking session, you can check the photo that has been taken in the Proctorio gradebook. -
Require the participant to sign an agreement before beginning the exam
By enabling this option, the participant will need to sign or write down their name below an agreement text. The content of the text is determined by Proctorio.
Other options
Under other options, Ans has combined all options that prevent other ways of fraud. The options are quite self-explanatory, but a short explanation has been added.
-
Prevents exam material from being lifted or content being brought into the exam by disabling the clipboard
This option disables the possibility to copy and paste text. For example, by using control + C (or command + C on Macs). This also disables the possibility to paste text that was copied before the test started, for example in case a participant pasted text to the clipboard. -
Prevents access to unauthorised material by requiring any other webpages to be closed before starting the exam
If this option is enabled, all other tabs of the browser and other browser screens need to be closed before the test can be started. -
Prevents notes or unauthorised materials to be hidden on a second screen
This option will detect second screens which are attached to the device of the participant. The second monitor needs to be disconnected before the test can be started. -
Prevents exam distribution by blocking Print functionality
This option makes sure that the print functionality of Google Chrome cannot print content of the test. If the print functionality is used, for example by using control + P (or command + P on Macs), the content of the document that will be printed will be completely empty. -
Prevents participants from downloading or saving any type of file during the exam and automatically end the session
If this option is enabled, the participants are not allowed to download or save any file. If you are making use of file upload questions or if participants are allowed to use a file which is added to the test, it's recommended to disable this option as it will result in participants being excluded from the test. -
Prevents exam distribution by erasing all traces of the exam from the computer after the attempt ends
If option is enabled, the cache for the taking session will be cleared as soon as the participant submits their test. -
Prevents access to the right click menu
By disabling the right click menu, Google Chrome will not respond to any right clicks the participant performs to try any options which this menu provides. -
Allows participants to use a scratch pad on-screen
This enables the scratch pad. If you have enabled the digital notes option in Ans, the participants will have two notes options.
Fullscreen options
The fullscreen option contains four options to determine whether fullscreen is enforced. Only one option can be selected. It is possible to not enforce fullscreen at all, which allows participants to navigate outside Google Chrome. If this option is not chosen, fullscreen must be enabled during the test. There are three tolerance options which determine how much time a participant has to go back into fullscreen mode. This can be either 0, 15 or 30 seconds. If the fullscreen mode is disabled, the participant can no longer continue with their test. A message will be shown where the participant is directed to go back into the test.
Tabs options
The tabs option contains three options to determine the possibility to open new browser tabs. You can disallow tabs being opened, allow everything or allow specified URLs which are included in the test, for example as part of a question.
Re-entry options
The re-entry options contain three options to determine the possibility for participants to re-enter the test in cases where something went wrong. You can provide the possibility to re-enter an unlimited amount of times, or to prevent it at all. The third option makes sure that only Proctorio staff can allow participants access to the test. Participant (students) or your school must contact Proctorio in these cases.
If a participant re-enters the test, the participant will continue with the same attempt. However, there will be two instances of that particular participant in the Proctorio gradebook.
