Assignment labels can be assigned to assignments in a course. It is a visual label which can be used to show the status of an assignment and cooperate with colleagues. Assignment labels are sorted in alphabetical order. Once assignment labels have been created by administrators, they can be used by all employees of your school for any type of assignment in their course. The use of these labels is not mandatory for employees.
Please note that assignment labels can be different from question bank assignment labels. Question bank labels are not synchronised when an assignment is planned into a course. They are two separate types of labels.
Assignment labels can also be used in combination with assignment protection rules. In case that a assignment label has one or more protection rules, this is indicated with a lock-icon. When you hover over the label, a tooltip appears listing the applied protection rules. This makes it easier to recognise restricted assignments and overview which changes are disabled.

Assignment protection rules
The assignment protection rules provide the possibility to disable specific editing actions for an assignment. After adding assignment labels to your school, you can add assignment protection rules to these labels. Assignment protection rules are only applicable to assignments that have labels. Therefore, assignment protection rules can only be used in assignments in your course and not in your question bank.
In the assignment labels menu, you can select one or more rules that are applicable to the assignments connected to that assignment label. You can use this feature to prevent assignments to be edited or partially edited in a particular stage of the development of the assignment. It can also be used to archive old assignments, so they cannot be edited any longer.
Assignment protection rules can be added to:
-
Disable exercise and question changes
This option prevents users to make changes to exercises and questions in an assignment. Users cannot add new exercises, questions and descriptions, or edit existing ones.
-
Disable grading scheme changes
This option prevents users from modifying the grading scheme in an assignment. Users cannot edit the grading type, the maximum points, the model answer, the question options, the weight (only applicable to rubric with levels), and the criteria (only applicable to points per criterion). This also includes changes to the contribution of a question.
-
Disable objective changes
This option prevents users to make changes to learning objectives in an assignment. Users cannot link learning objectives to an exercise, or unlink them from an exercise.
-
Disable review changes
This option prevents users to make changes when reviewing assignments. This includes (un)reviewed results, creating and answering flags, and creating and answering annotations. The contribution of the questions can also not be adjusted in the Insights tab.
-
Disable mark calculation changes
This option prevents users to make changes to the mark calculation formula. The page Mark calculation in the settings of the assignment is then locked and cannot be adjusted.

Please note that disabling result changes will also prevent students from taking the assignment, as it blocks them from answering questions.
-
Disable discussion changes
This option prevents users to make changes to the discussions of the assignment. Open and closed discussions cannot be answered or reopened by employees. Be aware that students can still start new discussions if the publication window allows this, but they cannot be responded to by staff.
