error_outline This menu is visible for administrators only.
This article covers all the general school settings that can be adjusted by an administrator. To navigate to this page, follow the steps below:
- Click the domainSchool name in the menu on the left.
- Click settingsSettings in the menu at the top.
- Click General in the menu on the left.
In this menu, you will have the option to edit the following settings:
- Name of the school
- Default language
- Time zone
- Start school year
- Name sorting
For each of these settings, more information can be found below:
Name of the school
The name of the school can be adjusted here. This name is visible for all users after they login to Ans. The name is visible in the top left corner in the main menu of Ans.
For users that use single sign-on (SSO), please note that we do not use this field for the name of the school in the login menu of Ans. We use the name of the school that is provided by your SSO provider. If you want to align the name of the school in Ans and the name of the school visible in the SSO, make sure to fill in the same name in this field.
Default language
This is the default language for all users when they login to Ans. Every user can change their language by using the language preference option. The default language can be English, Dutch, German or French. All text boxes and attributes that are created by Ans are created in the default language (unless an individual user changes their language preferences). For example, if a question bank is created, Ans creates 4 labels (draft, review needed, revision needed and accepted). If the language preference is set to Dutch, the labels created will be visible in Dutch. If the language is changed after the creation of the question bank, the labels will remain in their original language. It is possible to change the language of your question bank labels manually.
Time zone
The default time zone is set to Central European Time (CET), which is equivalent to UTC +1:00. If your school is based outside of this time zone, you can change the time zone by using the dropdown menu. If you have ongoing digital assignments or upcoming assignments with an existing timeslot, they will be updated automatically when the default time zone is changed.
An example: a timeslot is set from 9.00 - 11.00 and the default time zone was UTC +1:00 when the timeslot was created. If the timezone is changed to UTC +2:00, the timeslot of the exam is automatically adjusted to 10.00 - 12.00. Ans will also take daylight saving time into account by default for all selected time zones and adjust the timeslot accordingly.
Start school year
In this dropdown menu you can select the starting month of the school year. This field has an effect on all courses and the overview of all courses. In the overview of courses, you can see that a filter is automatically applied to the school year you're currently in. In the example below, you can see an overview of all courses for 2022/2023.
If you have selected September as starting month of your school year, Ans will show all courses of the year 2022/2023 from 1 September 2022 until 31 August 2023. All courses that are connected to the year 2023/2024 will be visible in the default course overview from 1 September 2023 onwards.
Please note that the course year is just an attribute to filter courses in the overview shown above. It is, regardless of the course year, possible to schedule assignments in any course you select. For example, it might happen that a resit of an assignment takes place outside of the same school year. You can still use the course of the previous school year and schedule an assignment that takes place in the next school year.
Name sorting
Name sorting affects all interfaces in Ans on which names are listed. For example, in the Users menu. Ans merges the First and Last name(s) and shows the Name of each user. Based on the choice in this dropdown menu, the names are sorted either on first- or last name.
