ReadSpeaker partners with Ans to deliver support to students who need extra help reading text during digital tests. By enabling the integration with ReadSpeaker, text in a digital test is converted to speech, which is played via the computer. Students can easily select certain parts of text, press the play button and the text is read out loud.
ReadSpeaker supports the following languages: Dutch, English, German, French and Spanish.
The use of DocReader is also supported in Ans, which gives participants the option to read attachments which are uploaded to a digital test using DocReader in addition to the regular ReadSpeaker functionalities. Your school will need to have an active ReadSpeaker DocReader license. An administrator from your school must whitelist the Ans object store URL in their ReadSpeaker dashboard, which is: https://docreader.readspeaker.com/.
If you are using ReadSpeaker in combination with a lockdown browser, such as Schoolyear or Safe Exam Browser, no additional URLs need to be whitelisted in your lockdown browser, except if you are using the Docreader product in your exam. The current list in this article is still accurate and up to date.

If you are currently testing the ReadSpeaker integration on our development environment, please ensure that you whitelist dev.ans.app in the ReadSpeaker configuration environment. Failure to do so may result in one of the following errors being displayed:
‘An error occurred, try again’
‘Not found. The requested URL/enterprise/Access denied for referee https:dev.ans.app/ was not found on this server.’
If the download option is enabled, participants will be able to download the text as an MP3 file with an audio version that they can listen to offline.
The text in the digital test that is being read out loud, is displayed at the bottom of the page in large font size and simultaneous word highlighting. Participants can play, pause or stop the audio and increase and decrease the size of the text.
By enabling the help setting, participants can obtain clear instructions on how to use each ReadSpeaker feature.
By enabling the lookup setting, participants can select a word and find its definition in the dictionary. The available languages can be found here.
If page mask is enabled, a horizontal bar is shown and can be moved along with the reading to bring out the lines being read by shading the rest of the screen. This makes it easier for participants to focus on smaller portions of text at a time.
Read on hover
Read on hover helps participants to focus on the text, paragraph by paragraph. Participants can listen to a single paragraph being read out loud by simply hovering over it with the cursor.
By enabling settings, participants can personalise the reading speed, reading volume and highlighting colours to their own preferences.
The simple view offers participants distraction-free reading. Participants can view the text in plain text format and is able to personalise the font size, font, background text colour combination and text spacing.
By enabling the tool toggle, participants will see a pop-up control panel where they can pause/play the audio and toggle the automatic scrolling of the page.
If the translation setting is enabled, selected text can be translated to a number of languages. The translation of the selected text will then be read out loud. The available languages can be found here.
By enabling voice settings, participants can personalise the reading language voice.
