Create a fill-in-the-gap question

Before the gaps can be created, it is necessary to create an exercise with the question. To create an exercise with a fill-in-the-gaps question, follow the steps below.

1. Navigate to your question bank or your course assignment.
2. Click New exercise, fill in a title and click Create.
3. Click New question and select Fill-in-the-gaps.
4. Add input to the following fields:
   • Question*: this the question content field where the text of the question can be formulated and the gaps can be added to.
   • Points*: the number of points that the question is worth.
   • Scoring method: the scoring method used to grade the question. There are three methods:
     • All or nothing: Students earn full points if they answer all gaps correctly. Otherwise, they receive no points.
     • Partial: Points are awarded for each correct answer. 
     • Custom: Manually award points for each answer.
   • QUESTION FEEDBACK: click the dropdown to:
     • Add a model answer. 
     • Provide feedback to participants that is shown during the taking of a digital test if the option 'Feedback' is enabled in the accessibility settings of the assignment. The feedback can be filled and shown when:
       • The question is answered correctly.
       • The question is answered partially correctly (only possible when the 'Partial' and 'Custom' scoring methods are used). 
       • The question is answered incorrectly.
   • Objectives: if there are learning objectives in the question bank or course that the question is created in, the objective can be selected or typed in to add to the question.
5. In the place you want to create an answer field click New gap. There are three types of gaps:
   • Alphanumeric: a free textfield where both letters and numbers can be used. The participants must fill in the exact answer to receive points. Enabling the option 'Case sensitive' will check the answer on the participant including the use of uppercase and lowercase letters. The 'Input field width' allows you to set the width of the field in the interface, but it is not a restriction for participants. 
   • Numeric: participants can only use numbers, dots, the minus symbol(-) and the letter 'e' (to indicate an exponent). The 'Margin (absolute)' field can be optionally used to include a margin for the participant's answer. 
   • Dropdown: show the answer options through a dropdown. Participants will have to choose their answer from a dropdown menu instead of typing it manually. This allows them to view all possible answers, effectively turning the question into a multiple choice format. 
     If this option is enabled, the guess score will be calculated only when there are up to 1024 possible combinations in the question. For example:
     • If the question has 5 gaps with each 4 alternatives, there are 625 (5^4) possible combinations, so the guess score will be calculated. 
     • If the question has 5 gaps with each 5 alternatives, there are 3125 (5^5) possible combinations, so the guess score will not be calculated. A guess score of 0 will be returned.
6. Once you have created the gaps, click Save. In case you accidentally removed a gap in the question field, it can be restored by clicking on the arrow_drop_down-icon next to the New gap button to restore it.
7. Click Update to save the fill-in-the-gaps question.

Add a grading scheme to a fill-in-the-gaps question

All options mentioned below for the grading scheme can also be adjusted from the exercise tab when creating a multiple choice question. However, it is only possible to adjust the grading scheme from this tab if the assignment has been taken. 

1. Click on the Grading scheme tab at the top of the assignment or question bank exercise.
2. Navigate to the question for which you want to set the grading scheme.
3. Click the edit-icon.
4. Optionally, adjust the number points that the question is worth.
5. Optionally, adjust the scoring method:
   • All or nothing: Students earn full points if they answer all gaps correctly. Otherwise, they receive no points.
   • Partial: Points are awarded for each correct answer. 
   • Custom: Manually award points for each gap within the question.
6. The gaps can only be created when constructing the question. From the grading scheme tab, the correct answers can only be adjusted. The possibilities are different per gap type:
   • In the alphanumeric gap it is possible to adjust the content of the correct answer, add more answers, remove answers, and to enable the option 'Case sensitive'.
   • In the numeric gap it is possible to adjust the content of the correct answer, add more answers, remove answers, and to set a margin in the 'Margin (absolute)*' field.
   • In the dropdown gap it is possible to adjust the correct answer option. It is not possible to adjust the content. 
7. Optionally, click the QUESTION FEEDBACK dropdown to:
   1. Add or adjust the model answer. 
   2. Provide feedback to participants that is shown during the taking of a digital test if the option 'Feedback' is enabled in the accessibility settings of the assignment. The feedback can be filled and shown when:
      • The question is answered correctly.
      • The question is answered partially correctly (only possible when the 'Partial' and 'Custom' scoring methods are used). 
      • The question is answered incorrectly.
8. Optionally, add or adjust the learning objectives in the Objectives field. If there are no learning objectives added to the question bank or course, the field will not be visible.
9. Click Update. 

Options for a fill-in-the-gaps question

For additional options, click the settings -icon. There are the following options:

• Bonus
  This marks the question as a bonus question, which means that its points are not included in the maximum amount of points achievable for that assignment. If a student answers the question incorrectly, this will not be detracted from the number of points and the mark. However, when awarding points, it is possible to achieve more points that the maximum points achievable for the assignment.

Submitted answers

After the digital test has been taken, it is possible to add submitted answers to the grading scheme. 

Follow the steps below to add submitted answers to the grading scheme. 

1. Navigate to the Grading scheme tab of the fill-in-the-gaps question. 
2. Click on the edit-icon to edit the grading scheme.
3. Navigate to the gap.
4. Select the answer you want to add as correct answer by clicking on the answer under 'Other answers given'.
