Tags can be added to exercises within a question bank. You can use tags to give exercises more metadata. Tags are recommended to help filter the list of all exercises in your question bank. They can also be used when you are generating an assignment based on a blueprint.
A tag is always built up out of a key and a value. The key is a unique identifier to group different values (subjects) under. When you add a tag to your question bank exercise, you have the option to fill in a new key or choose an already existing key. When you click on an existing key, you have the option to choose an already existing value or fill in a new value.
As an example, this is how a tag can be built up:
Key: Genetics
Values: Molecular genetics, Developmental genetics, Population genetics.
Once a tag has been created in an exercise, it can be reused for every exercise within your question bank. You can find an overview of the tags that are used in your question bank in the settings which is also where you can edit and/or delete a tag.
To add a (new) tag to a question bank exercise, follow the steps below.
- Click on +Tag on the left and fill in a key and value.
- Click Create and the tag is created.
Relative or enemy relation between exercises
In a question bank, it is possible to define relations between exercises. This can be a relative relation or an enemy relation. With a relative relation, you can indicate that exercises complement each other and would be beneficial to have in the same assignment. An enemy relation is a way to indicate that having both exercises in the assignment would be disadvantageous, for instance, if the description in one exercise would provide the answer for a question in another exercise.
The two types of relations are further explained below.
- Relative relation: relative exercises are exercises that complement and strengthen each other. Most often, you would want to include relative exercises within the same assignment.
- Enemy relation: enemy exercises are exercises that could include information that gives away the answer to another exercise within the same assignment. The way an exercise is worded may have information that is required in the answer of another exercise. For this reason, you would not want to include enemy exercises within the same assignment.

Relation between exercises in the same question bank assignment
If enemy exercises exist together in a question bank assignment, a red badge will be displayed to indicate a potential conflict. The badges are numbered, to display the connection between the exercises since it is possible to have multiple enemy relations within the same question bank assignment. When a badge is displayed, you can choose to remove one of the enemy exercises from your question bank assignment. The decision of which exercise should be removed can be made easier by taking into account the relative relations between the exercises in your question bank assignment. A relative relation is indicated with a blue badge next to the exercise.
error_outline Keep in mind, Ans will not automatically exclude enemy exercises in a question bank assignment when creating a new question bank assignment or when generating a question bank assignment from a blueprint. The exercises will still need to be manually excluded. This provides teachers with the freedom to ignore enemy relations when desired.
