On 13 December 2026, we will remove the legacy fixed-position functionality that existed before 7 December 2025 for the following question types:
- Order questions
- Match questions
- Statement questions
- Multiple choice questions
The pinning functionality introduced on 7 December 2025 will also be removed for Order questions. Pinning will remain available for Match, Statement, and Multiple choice alternatives.
What’s changing?
On 7 December 2025, we changed how fixed positions worked in several question types. Previously, users could place an alternative in a specific position using the position field. For example, an alternative that was first in the question could be fixed to the fourth position by changing the number in the position field to four (4).
This legacy functionality was replaced with the current pinning functionality for Order, Match, Statement, and Multiple choice questions.
From 13 December 2026:
- The pin icon will be removed from alternatives in Order questions. Alternatives that were previously pinned will be treated as regular alternatives.
- Any legacy fixed-position settings that still exist in older Order, Match, Statement and Multiple Choice questions will be removed. Alternatives that use the legacy fixed-position functionality will be moved to their specified position and pinned there. For example, an alternative that was created first but fixed to the fourth position will appear fourth in the question and remain pinned in place.
Pinning will continue to be available for Match, Statement, and Multiple choice questions.
What does this mean?
Until 13 December 2026
- Existing pinned alternatives in Order questions will continue to behave as they do today.
- Legacy fixed-position settings in older Order, Match, Statement, and Multiple choice questions will remain in place.
From 13 December 2026 onwards
Order questions
Order questions will always be presented in a shuffled order. Pinned and fixed-position alternatives will no longer be supported. Any alternatives that were previously pinned or used the legacy fixed-position functionality will be treated as regular alternatives.
This aligns with the purpose of the question type, in which students are expected to determine the correct sequence themselves.Match questions, Statement questions, and Multiple choice questions
The legacy fixed-position functionality will be removed.
Any alternatives that still use this functionality will be moved to their specified position and pinned in place. The pinning functionality introduced on 7 December 2025 will remain available and is not affected by this change.
Why are we making this change?
Fixing an alternative to its correct position in an Order question removes part of the task the student is expected to complete. Removing pinning from this question type ensures that students must determine the complete correct sequence themselves.
The legacy position field has also been superseded by the clearer pinning functionality introduced on 7 December 2025. Removing the remaining legacy behaviour will make answer positioning easier to understand and maintain while aligning its use across the platform.
