Set different timeslots for extra time students in different groups & classes
Summary: You can now set a timeslot for extra time students in a group or class. Previously this was only possible for all participants in a course.
Benefits: This makes it easier to plan different timeslots for different classes with extra time students. It can also be used to create a 'resit' group with different timeslots for extra time students.
Additional information: This is only available if the beta feature 'Extra time' is enabled. This addition is only applicable for timeslots for the taking of a test and not for the publication timeslots.
The classes tab has now been moved into the users tab
Summary: The tab 'Classes' can now be found in the tab 'Users'.
Benefits: Better oversight. All user information is in one tab.
Moved the question bank assignment blueprint select field to the settings page
Summary: We moved the selection field for the blueprint of a question bank assignment to the settings page.
Benefits: This helps us distinguish permissions more easily.
Additional information: This has to do with the work we are doing for custom roles. In addition, the blueprint tab is now no longer visible if the question bank assignment is not attached to a blueprint.
Previous location of selection field:
New location of selection field:
We improved the message shown to students if the student does not meet the location requirements to start a digital test
Description: Students will be informed as to why they cannot take an assignment when they do not meet the location requirements to start a digital test.
Student numbers are sent to ProctorExam as external ID of student sessions
Summary: We now add the student number to ProctorExam sessions in the external ID field.
Benefits: This means you can find student sessions in ProctorExam using the student number of the participant. In the screenshot below, you can see that the student number as it is registered in Ans is included in the ProctorExam session. We've indicated the student number field with a red box.
Additional information: This feature is only available if the ProctorExam beta feature has been enabled.

The export for open questions of a digital test is now processed as a background job
Description: Requesting the export of open questions will now be done in a background job. You will receive an email once the export is done, with a link to the job, to download your exported files.
Benefits: This is in line with other exports and safer since we no longer email you the export.
Additional information: The background job can also be accessed from your user settings page and will be deleted after 14 days.
This export is only shown as available if you have open questions in your digital test.
We have improved the consistency in mandatory fields in the course settings page
Description: We now also require the study field to be present from the course settings page.
Benefits: Department admins would lose access to a course if all studies were removed from the course, with this change this is no longer possible.
We now show the merge dialog when converting an employee to a student where a student with that student number already exists
Summary: When converting an employee to a student where a student with that student number already exists, we now show the merge dialog with the option to merge both accounts.
Benefits: This change makes it easier to merge an employee with a student account. Additionally, this prevents duplicate accounts for one user.
Removed eleven test from school settings
Summary: We have removed the eleven test for student number validation in the school settings as this feature wasn't used by any school.
Admins are no longer added as instructors when importing classes
Summary: We no longer assign (department) admins to classes when importing.
Benefits: This makes the behavior consistent with creating a class from the interface.
Removed course and question bank icons on their overview pages
Summary: We removed the icons on the overview pages for courses and question banks
Benefits: The icons were redundant and the overview is now easier to read.
Previous course overview:
New course overview:
Align the use of icons
Summary: We have changed several icons in our platform.
Benefits: Display of icons is now more consistent across the platform. We have also changed overlapping or ambiguous use of icons and assigned icons a specific use. The changes to icons are:
-
- We changed the assignment icons from extension to dashboard.
- We changed the policy Results icon to beenhereResults.
- We changed the mark_chat_read Review icon to content_paste_searchReview.
- We changed the bookmark icon in a digital test from bookmark_add to bookmark_border.
- With the exception of the courses icon (label_important), we also now only use the outlined style for icons.
Archiving assignments feature additions
Summary: We have added the following additions to the archiving assignments feature:
- Included archiving events in the assignment log. We have included archiving assignment events in the assignment log.
- Unarchiving a result when an assignment is archived is prevented. We now restrict unarchiving of results when its assignment is archived. This ensures there are no unarchived results in archived assignments, which are difficult to find.
- Archiving of open assignments is prevented. We do not allow assignments with a current timeslot to be archived anymore. This solves the issue of participants trying to take an assignment which is already archived.
Renaming of multiple elements in the platform
Summary: Based on your feedback, we are working on multiple interface inconstancies and improvements. Below you can find the element(s) that have been renamed, including the place in the platform where it changed. The change is applied to all translations of the platform unless indicated otherwise.
- Renamed 'itembank toets' to 'itembanktoets' in all places in the platform where the itembanktoets is used. This applies to the Dutch version of the platform only.
- Renamed 'Random samengesteld' to 'Random gegenereerd' in the assignment insights. This applies to the Dutch version of the platform only.
- Renamed 'Review per student' to 'Review per participant' in the review menu of an assignment.
- Renamed 'This question bank has # questions' to 'This question bank has # exercises' in the exercises tooltip of the question banks menu.
- Renamed 'Vragen toewijzen' to 'Opgaven toewijzen' in the assigning exercises to reviewers popup. This applies to the Dutch version of the platform only.
- Renamed 'assignment' in 'Digital peer-reviewed assignment' and 'Digital self-reviewed assignment' to 'test'.

Bug fixes
- Fixed in issue where enabling a lockdown browser integration would prevent the instructor from accessing a preview result
The check in the codebase for lockdown browser integrations (Safe Exam Browser & STEP) did not exclude demo (preview) results - Fixed an issue where preview results would be included in the calculation item analysis values in the insights
Results that were created by using the preview feature for digital tests were included in the p, rit and rir value. This fix is only for new item analysis values. We did not recalculate all existing analysis. - Fixed an issue where filtering on school years in classes would incorrectly select the checkboxes in the dropdown
The checkbox of the filtered school year would not be ticked after filtering. - Disabled confirmation pop-up for students when viewing the criteria during a publication
During a publication, students can click on the 0 points in the grading scheme and would then receive a pop-up asking them to confirm if they want to award zero points. - Fixed an issue where live assignments were shown in the user schedule which were not planned for the user
We would show all assignments from the courses that the user belongs to even though the student was not added to a timeslot. We now also check if the user has access based on the timeslots. - Fixed the translation for the description dropdown menu
The translations were set in English for the dutch translation. This only affected the dutch translations - Fix issues with the preview of a question bank exercise when changing the question type to hotspot match
Changing from open to hotspot match would keep the response for the open question which was not linked to a hotspot area. - Fix copying mark calculation from question bank assignment when a randomized blueprint is used
Due to a bug the grade calculation options from a question bank would never be copied to an assignment if a randomized blueprint was used. - Fixed an issue in the Safe Exam Browser with downloading files
We've added the objectstore as whitelisted URL to the safe exam browser configuration, to allow downloading of images/files that are served through the platform - Fixed an issue where a tooltip would overflowing outside the screen
In case a the width of a tooltip is larger than the width of the screen, the width of the tooltip will stretch the width of the screen. This is not desirable, the tooltip should be wrapped and continue on a new line. - Fixed an issue where the questions in a digital test would be correctly answered but no points would be awarded when using the feedback button during a digital test
When using the feedback option in a digital test the score of a question is directly calculated, if the student changed his answer after viewing the feedback, the score would not be recalculated on submit, causing the score to be incorrect. - Fixed an issue where the question insights were not shown
In rare cases we would create 2 item analyses and one version would be updated and the other shown. - Fixed an issue where it was not possible to search on an exact timestamp via API V2
Timestamp are stored with 6 milliseconds precision in our database, but it was not possible for a user to use this as we only show 3 milliseconds in the response. When searching on a "2022-11-15T15:12:09" we will search between 15:12:09.00000 and 15:12:09.999999 and when searching with 3 milliseconds "2022-11-15T15:12:09.088" we will search between 15:12:09.087900 and 15:12:09.088100 - Fixed an issue with the numbering in the review overview pop up that would not correspond with the number shown in the header
We used to different ways of ordering which caused the numbers in the dialog to not correspond with the numbers shown in the grading header. - Fixed an issue where students couldn't upload a file when additional time was alloted
The check to verify if the student is allowed to upload a file, was not taking additional time into account. - Fixed an issue where it was not possible for staff members to leave a course
The link to leave a course from the user settings page did no longer work. - Fixed an issue with the preview of questions in a digital test
Changes to the abilities caused some options in the preview to no longer be visible (gaps, click to edit etc). - Fixed an issue where the student overview during reviewing cannot be closed
Changing the number (go to student) via the arrows would trigger several requests and cause the weird behavior. We also fixed the scroll issue for smaller screens. - Fixed an issue with the half and full-width comma in Chinese, Japanese and Korean text
A unicode block which caused the preview to not load. - Fixed an issue where the options button for hotspot areas would not work after the test was taken as all options were hidden
We have ability checks on the options in the options dropdown and all options were no longer visible as you cannot remove hotspot areas after the test is taken. We no longer show the options button when the test is taken. - Fixed an issue where it was not possible to change the contribution of bubble sheet questions
This was accidentally changed and has been restored. - Fixed an issue where it was not possible to add new staff to a course if the "Allow employees to invite students" privilege was disabled
The "Allow employees to invite students" also disabled the option for staff to add new staff to a course. - Fixed typo in 'The blueprint will be exported and send to your email' in the blueprint settings
In the blueprint settings under 'export blueprint' the subtext says 'The blueprint will be exported and send to your mail', which contains a grammatical error. 'Send' in this case should be 'sent'. - Fixed issued where authors could not create tags for question bank exercises
Authors don't longer get a message that they don't have the rights to add tags to a question bank exercise. - Fixed use of plural forms when indicating the amount of items used in match questions in the question summary of the editor
In the summary of match questions it always uses the plural forms when indicating the amount of rows and columns there were used. We changed '1 rows' and '1 columns' to '1 row' and '1 column' respectively. - Fixed an issue where links in the tags overview did not work
The links from the tags overview in the question bank were not working and this was fixed.
Changes to the platform
Archive assignments and results
Summary: In addition to archiving results, you can now also archive the assignment. Currently, the following information of assignments will be archived:
- Questions
- Grading scheme
- Objectives
- Flow
- Taking screen
- General settings
- Review options
- Timeslots
- Attachments
- Accessibility
- Requirements
- Assigned reviewers
- Publication
The following information has not been included yet:
- Prevent restoring results
- Prevent changes to integrations
- Prevent participants taking the assignment
Benefits: This feature allows you to archive all results and all contents and settings of a planned assignment, ensuring no (unauthorised) changes can be made.
Additional information: Archiving and unarchiving is done from the general settings of the assignment in the Danger zone section. The beta feature archives both assignments and results and has been renamed 'Archive assignments and results' for this reason.
Hide extra time in student overview if user isn't allowed to change this
Summary: The extra time column is now hidden in the students overview for users that don't have permission to change the extra time setting
Benefits: This limits the information shared with employees members that don't need to know about the extra time provided to students. Only administrators will be able to view and change the extra time settings in the students overview.
Additional information: This change does not impact the extra time column in the learners section of a course. This change only applies if the beta feature 'Extra time' is enabled.
Changes to filters
We have implemented four improvements to filters in the platform.
Improved the visibility of activated filters
Summary: Improved the contrast between active and inactive filters.
Benefits: It is now easier to see whether a filter is active.
Removed class filter in the user overview
Summary: We have removed the class filter from the student menu in the user overview.
Benefits: This will help with better controlling access to classes.
Additional information: Classes remain visible in the classes overview.
Removed the item 'reviews' from the reviews filter menu
Summary: Removed the item 'reviews' from the reviews filter menu. The reviews filter can be found in the results overview of an assignment.
Benefits: This was a non-functional item in the menu which we removed.
Additional information: The reviews feature is available through beta features so this should be enabled first.
Added thousands delimiters to counters
Summary: Added a dot to group digits in thousands for all the counters in the platform. For example for the amount of users.
Benefits: Counters with more than a thousand objects will be easier to read.
Additional information: As delimiter we use a dot, following the continental European standard.
Alumni has been released to open beta
Summary: The alumni feature has been moved to open beta. With this feature, it is possible to mark users as alumni in the interface. This means they won't be shown in the general users overview, but hidden behind a filter.
Benefits: Marking students as alumni can be helpful if you have alumni that you are required to keep data of for a period of time, but you would like to hide their accounts in user overview. By making use of the student filter in the user overview, you can filter on students or on alumni.
Additional information: Alumni are still included in any counters related to users in the platform. Additionally, we have renamed 'Uitstromers' to 'Alumni' when using the platform in Dutch.
Receive notifications when users reply to your comment or flag
Summary: The creator of a comment will receive a notification for each reply to the comment.
Benefits: This improves the workflow for comments and flags, so that users are notified of any responses timely.
Additional information: The notification will only be sent to the original author of the comment or flag.
Blocked email addresses are now unblocked after 24 hours
Summary: It may be possible that some email addresses within your school are blocked by Ans. If an automated email, for example to notify students that a publication has started, is sent to an email address which does not exist, the email bounces. To prevent our mailserver from being blocked by our supplier, the email address is blocked after 10 bounces within an hour. At this moment, we unblock the email address at irregular time intervals. This has been set to 24 hours.
Benefits: It is now clear when an email address is unblocked by Ans.
Exporting a class has been moved to a background job
Summary: Previously, the exported classes file was sent directly to the user via email. This has been moved to a background job. You can download the export file from within the platform.
Benefits: As the class export contains personal data, the export is preferably not shared via email. Therefore, the export has moved to background jobs so it is now only possible to download your export from within the platform. This better complies with the GDPR regulations.
Logs feature additions
Summary: In the release of October 16th, we moved the logs feature to open beta. We have now added reviews of question bank exercises to the question bank exercises log.
Benefits: More consistency between reviews of question bank exercises and reviews of results.
Additional information: The question bank exercise log is incorporated in the beta feature 'Logs'.
Renaming of multiple elements in the platform
Summary: Based on your feedback, we are working on multiple interface inconstancies and improvements. Below you can find the element(s) that have been renamed, including the place in the platform where it changed. The change is applied to all translations of the platform unless indicated otherwise.
- Renamed 'Rect' to 'Rectangle' and 'Poly' to 'Polygon' in hotspot and hotspot match questions.

- Fixed an issue in the French instruction confirmation email where the email would appear incorrectly.
- Fixed an issue where not all assignment types supported uploading files to results.
- Fixed an issue where unreadable email addresses would not get correctly parsed.
- Fixed an issue where assigning reviewers does not work when changing the language to French.
- Fixed an issue where attachments (in assignment settings) were not visible to invigilators.
Changes to the platform
The Schoolyear integration has been released to open beta
Summary: The Schoolyear integration has been moved to open beta.
Benefits: By enabling the integration with Schoolyear, the testing environment for students on private laptops (Bring Your Own Device) will be secured. Schoolyear temporarily locks the students' screen to prevent student access to other documents and applications during a digital test.
Additional information: The Schoolyear integration is in the open beta, which means an administrator will first need to enable it in order to use this feature. A license for the Schoolyear integration is required in order to use this feature.
Added the option to set specific exercises to be opened by participants only once
Summary: You can now set specific exercises to be opened only once by participants while taking a digital test. If a participant views an exercise during a digital test, the exercise will then be locked after viewing once. Participants can't go back to view or edit their answer. A warning is displayed to participants before navigating to a different exercise.
Benefits: This setting provides more granular control over participants' navigation between exercises as you can determine the reopening per exercise.
Additional information: The option can also be enabled to ensure participants cannot navigate back to an informational exercise, with a video or description, for example.
Added support of Japanese and Chinese characters in written assignments
Summary: We now support Japanese and Chinese characters in written assignments.
Benefits: It allows you to use Ans for your written assignments for courses and tests that need Japanese or Chinese characters.
Autostart will be enabled by default for permitted processes in the Safe Exam Browser configuration
Summary: Permitted processes (applications) are now automatically started when entering the Safe Exam Browser. Previously, the permitted applications were only started if autostart was enabled manually.
Benefits: On startup, Safe Exam Browser closes all applications, including permitted applications. It may not always be possible to start these applications in the lockdown browser. This means the permitted applications now run on startup.
Additional information: In Safe Exam Browser, this is a checkbox that can be enabled/disabled per permitted process. In Ans this setting is enabled for every permitted process.
It is no longer possible to add gaps with the same name to a fill-in question
Summary: The ability to add gaps with duplicate names to a fill-in question is no longer possible. An error will be displayed to inform you that the gap name already exists.
Benefits: If a question contained two gaps with the same name and a participant added two different answers, then one of the given answers would be duplicated for both gaps.
Additional information: Existing gaps with duplicate names have been updated to include a number in the name. For example, if a question has two gaps both named 'XY', they will be updated to 'XY 1' and 'XY 2'.
It is no longer possible to add duplicate exercises to assignments
Summary: Previously, a visual warning would appear when an exercise was added twice or more to an assignment from a question bank. However, the warning did not prevent the duplicates to be added to the assignment. The ability to add duplicate exercises to assignments is no longer possible.
Benefits: Duplicate exercises will not be overlooked.
Additional information: If an exercise has already been added to an assignment, it also will not appear in the 'Add exercises' dialogue. Existing duplicates (copied) questions will be unlinked in the assignment.
The solution of equations is displayed when creating a mathematical equation question
Summary: We have added the possibility to display the solution to an equation when editing or grading a mathematical equation question.
Benefits: You can now verify the equation and the operation will be graded correctly while creating or editing the question.
Display the full name of authors in the question bank exercise overview
Summary: The first and last name of an author is now displayed in the exercises overview in a question bank.
Benefits: You can better recognise the author of an exercise. This avoids confusion in case authors have the same first name.
Clicking the split-screen button opens the digital test in fullscreen instead of the attachment
Summary: Last release we have changed the position of the split screen button. In this release, we have changed the behaviour of the split screen button. When participants click the split-screen button if split screen is enabled, Ans will now open the test in full screen instead of the attachment.
Benefits: Based on your feedback, it turned out that the need among our users to 'close' the split-screen attachment is more common than the need to open the attachment in full-screen mode, so we adapted the toggle accordingly.
Additional information: It is still possible to switch in fullscreen from the test to the assignment, by using the tabs.
Reviews feature additions
Summary: We have expanded the reviews feature with the possibility to add comments to a review. A comment can be added without the need to first approve or disapprove a result. The comment will be visible in the log of the result.
Benefits: This allows adding more context to a review, for example, to elaborate the reason for an approval or disapproval.
Additional information: The log of the reviews comments are only accessible if you have the logs feature enabled (see logs feature below). The content of the reviews comments are also incorporated in the Results API.
Logs feature additions
Summary: In the previous release, we moved the logs feature to the open beta, which included logs for results and assignments. We have now added logs for question bank exercises. Currently, we show the following information in the question bank exercise log:

Features and improvements
Logs has been released to the open beta
Summary: The logs feature has been moved to the open beta. This feature revamps what was previously the 'Audit Log'. The log shows more detailed information about changes made within the platform and presents them in a comprehensive manner. For now, the log is available for results and assignments. Currently we show the following information in the logs:
Results
- Started/submitted
- Student activity
- Viewing exercises
- Answering questions
- Reviewing activity
- Assigned/removed points
- Reviews, review requests including content (this is a beta feature and should be turned on first)
- Incidents including content (this is a beta feature and should be turned on first)
- Flags including content
- Discussions including content
- Archiving actions
Assignments
- Created
- Timeslots
Benefits: You can use the log information for internal use, for example to keep track of changes made to an assignment or a result.
Additional information: If enabled, the previous audit log will be replaced. Eventually we are planning to use the same format for logs in other places within the platform.
Manual plagiarism checks for Ouriginal has been released to the open beta
Summary: The manual plagiarism checks feature has been moved to the open beta. The default setting for when Ouriginal is enabled for your assignment, is to automatically send the answers of all participants for the plagiarism check.
Benefits: This feature makes it possible to turn off this auto-submit feature within the integration and instead manually submit answers for analysis by Ouriginal.
Additional information: The manual plagiarism checks feature is in the open beta, which means an administrator will first need to enable it in order to use this feature. A licence for the Ouriginal integration is also required in order to use this feature.
Added insights per group for questions in planned assignments
Summary: We have replaced the feature for viewing insights per class or group with an overview with which to easily compare the different values.
Benefits: Users can now view the insights of questions for different groups in one overview.
A digital test with attachments will start in split-screen mode by default
Summary: A digital test with attachments will start in split-screen mode by default. In addition, the split-screen/full-screen toggle for attachments, which used to be a black bar, has been changed to an icon and moved to the attachments bar.
Benefits: Participants are more clearly made aware that there is an attachment included in the digital test. They still have the option to close the viewer or view the attachment in full-screen. With the addition of the split-screen/full-screen toggle, it is easier to toggle split-screen & full-screen directly from the test view. The toggle is also easier to find.
Additional Information: Opening by default and allowing students to close the viewer or view the attachment full-screen was determined preferable to the risk that students might miss that the digital test includes an attachment. If you click on the toggle without any attachments open, the first attachment will automatically be opened.
Added a warning that flow will not be supported when converting a digital test to a written assignment
Summary: When flow has been used in your digital test and you want to convert this digital test to a written assignment, a warning will be displayed when clicking the convert button.
Additional information: Flow was not supported in written assignments before, but now a warning is shown.
Extended LaTeX support in preview of written assignments
Summary: If you use LaTeX in written assignments, the preview of the assignment now also shows LaTeX that is created by using backslashes with brackets. Previously, the preview was only showing LaTeX if it was created by using the double dollar signs.
Benefits: You can now use brackets in combination with backslashes to type LaTeX which will also show correctly in the preview of the written assignment. To start typing LaTeX, use \(\backslash (\). After finishing your formula or text in LaTeX, type \(\backslash)\).
The LTI 1.3 has been released out of open beta
Summary: The LTI 1.3 integrations have now been released out of beta. At the moment, the LMS platforms Canvas, Brightspace, Blackboard and Moodle are supported for LTI 1.3.

- It will no longer be possible to use LTI 1.2 after the deprecation.
- We advise institutions to replace their LTI 1.2 integration to version 1.3 as soon as possible as IMS Global stopped supporting version 1.2 on June 30, 2022. You can find more information on how to setup LTI 1.3 here.
Added the STEP integration to university integrations to configure a default config key
Summary: The initial setup for the STEP integration has been moved to the university settings. Activating the STEP integration will still be done through the assignment settings.
Benefits: A default configuration key can now be set in the university integration settings. This configuration key will then be set as the default configuration key for newly created assignments.
Additional Information: It is still possible to overwrite the default configuration key of the university settings. A new configuration key can be set in the STEP assignment integration settings.

Features and improvements
Added support for DocReader in attachments when using the Readspeaker integration
Summary: We added support for DocReader, which is an additional module of Readspeaker.
Benefits: Participants with accessibility needs are able to read attachments which are uploaded to a digital test using DocReader in addition to the regular Readspeaker functionalities.
Additional information: For this functionality to work, your institution must have a Readspeaker DocReader licence and an active Readspeaker integration in Ans. An administrator of your school must whitelist our objectstore URL in their Readspeaker dashboard, which is: https://docreader.readspeaker.com/.
If you are using Readspeaker in combination with a lockdown browser, such as Schoolyear or Safe Exam Browser, no additional URLs need to be whitelisted in your lockdown browser. The current list in this article is still accurate and up to date.
The LTI 1.3 has been released to the open beta
Summary: The LTI 1.3 integrations are now available in the open beta. In the near future, this will replace the current LTI integrations which are built on version LTI 1.2. IMS Global will not support this version in the future. You can find more information about the deprecation schedule of LTI here.
Additional information: Currently, the LMS platforms Canvas, Brightspace, Blackboard and Moodle are supported. All support articles on how to enable the LTI 1.3 integration and how to create an LTI 1.3 link for your assignments will be published to our help center when the release is deployed on the production environment on the 25th of September 2022. The deprecation date of the LTI 1.2 will be announced in the next pre-release.

Added the user object to the webhook
Summary: The webhook now also supports user objects.
Benefits: It is now possible to create a webhook for users, which allows for updates to be received in real time for changes made to users, and see which changes have been made. Just like for other supported webhook attributes, the create, update and delete events are supported.
Updated styling of filters

Features
Limit Guess Correction to 0
Summary: To prevent students from receiving negative scores, we have added the option to limit the corrected score after applying the guess correction to 0.
Benefits: This feature will be added to the guess correction option when you’ve selected the formula as mark calculation method. This feature is helpful for assignments that combine open-ended questions and closed-ended questions, which can be corrected for guessing. If you use this option, the score of the open-ended part will not be affected by the guess correction.
Additional information: All information about this option and examples of how the feature works can be found in the renewed guess correction article and in the new mark calculation examples article.
Improvements to printing and scanning
Summary: We have made improvements to the printing and scanning of written assignments. This includes:
- The preview of a written assignment is now available on all environments.
